Brothers & Sisters:
Welcome to my class, neXus Physics 101. I will be your short lived professor for the day, Chase Grogan. Today we will briefly discuss two concepts: potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy (with the help of some of my youth group) is energy stored in an object due to its position above ground; energy that cannot be recreated or destroyed. Kinetic energy is an objects extra energy which has gotten the object from its resting state to its state within motion. For example; when a roller coaster is being lifted to the top of a hill, it is building up potential, or “stored” energy. When it gets to the top, the energy is then transferred into kinetic energy which forces the roller coaster to move, giving us the ride of our lives! Make sense? Hopefully; if not, let’s try it this way. Within this season there have been a lot of events going on. There are graduations, award banquets, and promotional ceremonies that generate a lot of excitement. Then there are several organizational meetings that I have been to where groups of people are gearing up and planning for future implementation.
All of these gatherings, whether high school graduation or a small group of professionals, to me, are like these orbs of potential energy. And like the roller coaster, I feel like people are being lifted up to the peaks of these mountains, but now what?!? Energy, according to Sir Isaac Newton, is neither created nor destroyed, and so it has to be transferred into something. That being said, we create these massive amounts of potential energy and then we have the option to idly store that energy or change it into kinetic energy (movement). What’s my point? Well, as youth workers, this is the season of promotion. There is excitement around the accomplishments, transitions, promotions, etc of not only our youth, but ourselves, our colleagues and our families. Clusters of people are forming, events are being planned, groups are coming together, and all of those things are great. However, I challenge you not to be that roller coaster stuck at the top of the hill. Let’s move!! Energy cannot be destroyed, it must be transferred. We have the opportunity to channel that energy into something positive and transformative for the youth that we serve. I would like to thank you for your attention in class today and hopefully you are encouraged for movement.
Forward,
Chase
Quote of the Week:
“Goals provide the energy source that powers our lives. One of the best ways we can get the most from the energy we have is to focus it. That is what goals can do for us; concentrate our energy." -Denis Waitley
